Hayley and Michael made it all happen at one of my favourite venues, Perth City Farm. And for the first time for me, a ceremony in the Art Room as well. I’ve always loved the industrial vibe of that place and they let their imagination run wild with the styling and decor. Read about their story below from the bride herself.
Tell us about how you met?
We met in 2013, I was employed by Michael’s parents to work in their family business, Wall Candy Wallpaper. It certainly wasn’t a love at first sight story for us, we worked together for nearly 18 months before things shifted in our worlds and the universe pointed us to each other.. and then all of a sudden it felt like it was destined to be.
Any funny first date stories?
We had our first official date in Fitzroy while over there for work, we went to an old pub and drank & ate way too much, it showed just how comfortable we instantly were with each other as there was no awkwardness or shame stuffing our faces on a first date!
How did the proposal go?
We got engaged in August 2017, in Mindarie. It was a private moment, nothing fancy or over the top, just us at the hotel where we had our first mini stay-cay together. It was perfect! We then spent the next 2 days visiting family and friends to celebrate!
Do you remember any funny stories in the planning stage or on the day itself?
We were really lucky that nothing major went wrong for us, but seeing ‘Groomzilla’ emerge in the last days before the wedding was pretty funny! We still joke about it to this day.
In a few sentences, how would you describe your wedding day? Was there a particular vibe or theme you went for?
It’s totally cliche to say, but it seriously was the most amazing day of our lives! We’ve been to quite a few weddings, so we had a long list of what we did and didn’t want. Of course we wanted to enjoy ourselves, but it was also really important to us that our guests did too.
So our vibe was focusing on everyone being comfortable (enough seating etc) providing plenty of drinks and ensuring everyone was fully fed! We had the bar open when guests arrived at the ceremony, huge grazing table, canapés, shared reception feast and wedding cake. Acoustic band Trouvaille treated as to live music all night which added a wonderful atmosphere.
What was your favourite moment?
So many favourite moments! Our ‘first look’ was incredibly special, our dog Hans barking during the vows was also very memorable!
Walking into our reception and seeing it for the first time was also insanely exciting! We are so thankful for the awesome work Emma from M Events did in executing it for us.
How did you decide on your venue?
We wanted an industrial style venue with the ability to DIY a lot so we could create the exact wedding we wanted. We found Perth City Farm through Instagram, it was the first venue we looked at and instantly we knew it was the one. A perfect blank canvas with quirky features we loved.
What’s your favourite detail from the day?
We loved everything about our wedding day, it’s difficult to pick just one detail. We put so much time and energy into planning, having it all come together and being such an awesome fun day was all we could ask for.
There was of course loads of beautiful details that we focused on in terms of the design – incredible florals, furniture, tableware and lighting, we also included some vintage pieces to add a unique and personal touch.
We loved having our fur babies at our ceremony, and instead of a traditional wedding favour, we made a donation to the Shenton Park Dogs Refuge.
If you were to do it again, what would do you differently?
There honestly isn’t anything we would change about the day we had, as it was exactly what we wanted. If we were to do it again it would have to be a totally different wedding, like eloping to Vegas and getting married by an Elvis impersonator!
And lastly is there any advice you would give to other couples planning their wedding?
Our advice to other couples planning a wedding would be to remember that the day is a representation of your love and commitment to each other – your wedding day, your rules! So remember you can say no, and focus on making on choices that make you happy!
Also if you are considering a DIY venue or personalized day we highly recommend hiring a stylist or at least an ‘on the day coordinator’ – because you don’t want to be running around last minute setting up tables or lighting candles, you want to be enjoying your day to the fullest (and chilling with a beverage!)
